KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 (Reuters) - A huge boat of fishermen abandoned their boat and lost their lives after a massive landslide off Malaysia's southern coast sank.

A rescue team called off rescue operations following a 7-metre (22ft) landslide that killed the eight people on board, while eight fishermen were rescued by helicopter in a different sinking boat.

Some fishermen took photos of what happened to them before the rescue boat got to them. They were given oxygen by their rescuers and were released by helicopter in another rescue operation.

The eight fishermen died at the scene as rescue teams tried to save their boats and recover their corpses to be sent to Kuala Lumpur, according to the police.

The landslide, which took place late on Tuesday afternoon, occurred in the village of Bukit Bintang, just south of Penang, in the southern part of the island state of Sulawesi.

According to the disaster management and disaster prevention agency Pambalam, the eight people drowned between March 1 and 31.
